From that moment, everything changed. Guillaume, a jazz and classical pianist, had fallen in love with Latin jazz—its energy, rhythms, and soul. To him, it was truly inspiring. Gerardo, an Afro-Cuban and Caribbean music expert who had recorded with legendary pianists Bebo Valdés and Edy Martínez, immediately recognized Guillaume’s talent. Passionate about the piano himself, Gerardo started music by learning the instrument and developed a deep, personal connection with it. He loved how Guillaume’s compositions and playing conveyed genuine emotion and was excited to explore how their worlds could come together. During that session, a special chemistry sparked. Guillaume felt a profound connection to Latin jazz, and Gerardo saw the potential for something truly unique. They decided to form Charanjazz, bringing in talented musicians: Myrthe, a specialist in both classical and jazz violin; Patricia, an expert in jazz and Latin bass; and Eduardo, an authentic sonero from Havana whose voice embodies the soul of Latin music. Gerardo explains, “Charanga is a vibrant Cuban ensemble that performs chachachá, danzón, and traditional music. We wanted to honor that while fusing it with jazz’s harmonic language.” Guillaume adds, “Latin jazz speaks to me on a deep level. It’s storytelling through rhythm and melody.
