“The line between composition and improvisation is not an easy one to draw. When improvising, pianists
decide to let their emotions and fingers flow into the very moment, but remain all the while within the
confines of the real time, albeit unconscious, creation of a score. Composers, however, seek to immortalize
their very own soundscape on paper, but ultimately wish to convey a feeling of freedom in their musical
writing. These works aim to immortalize such improvisations on paper, transforming and developing them
into more complex structures to bestow a renewed sense of freshness to famous French chanson material I
have been playing throughout my career.” GM

“La frontière entre la composition et l’improvisation est difficile à définir. Quand le pianiste improvisateur
décide de laisser son émotion et ses doigts se glisser dans l’instant même, il doit se limiter car il crée
inconsciemment une partition en temps réel. Mais lorsque le compositeur immortalise son univers
sonore sur le papier, son but ultime est de donner une sensation de liberté dans son écriture.
Mon travail a été d’immortaliser des improvisations sur du papier, les transformer et les développer dans
des structures plus complexes de manière à donner une sensation de fraicheur à des œuvres connues qui
m’ont accompagné le long de ma carrière musicale.” GM
